Meltaus

Snow course and event in the village of Meltaus, Jaunary - March 2005

Preparations for the snow event started with a snow construction course on January 21st-22nd 2005. Ten villagers participated in the course which was run by Jukka Teppo. The local shopkeeper had ordered a snow sculpture which was a perfect practical rehearsal. Snowmen were created in front of the shop. In the yard of the village house, the participants could train in making snow billets and snow sculpting: a reindeer and a horse were done by studying miniature models.

With the project’s financial support supplies were bought of which different kinds of moulds were made. The week before the event the villagers made snow sculptures with moulds and finalized the entity by using ready-made moulds (teddy bear, snowman and snow mobile).

The pupils participated by making snowmen a bit different. The snowmen were made by filling clothes with snow.

The actual event was held on March 4th 2005 with about 100 participants from Meltaus and surroundings. During the event there were for example tandem cross-country skiing competitions for children and adults and a buffet with snow chairs and tables. Fire and ice sculptures brought their own addition to the event.

The event was successful and had a fascinating atmosphere. The sculptures remained for several weeks for people to admire.
