Hirvas

Snow construction and event, February 2006

Hirvas is a village situated 11 km far from the city of Rovaniemi to South, along the river Kemijoki. There is an old tar burning site in the village. The nature trail is also worth experiencing. In addition there are good cross-country skiing, fishing, berry picking and hunting possibilities.

The village society of Hirvas was responsible for the overall coordination of the construction and event. The students of the Santa Claus Sports Institute were responsible for the organization of the planning and realization of the constructing.

Planning and coordination between the co-operaton partners (the local primary school, youth club and the village society) began December 19th 2005. The construction work took place February 2nd-3rd. Constructions included a pirate ship, a castle and a slide, snow horse, pyramide, labyrinth and a playfield. Different figures were built by the road for visitors to admire.

The snow event took place February 26th 2006. The event was a success despite of the cold temperature in the morning, -28! There were lots of visitors, also from other villages. The most distant visitors were from Stockholm!
